My Substack Goals
I have three goals for this Substack site, which I hope will interest a few readers.
The first is to expand access to a weekly column I’ve been writing since the summer of 2007. This column is syndicated in a couple dozen publications across Indiana, but only a small share, perhaps 25 percent of columns are actually targeted at an Indiana audience. I’m very grateful to these publications, and won’t be posting work here until well after it has been published. I deeply value local journalism and would not wish to move subscribers from those sites to this one. However, my writing and research explores issues far beyond the Hoosier state, so this is a more broadly (geographically) targeted platform.
Second, I’d like to write about policy issues and economic research that doesn’t fit nicely into the column format. There are lots of platforms for sharing the results of academic research. Plain writing in this environment is one I wish to use more heavily.
Finally, I wish to share writing and work from other scholars, whose work I admire. I try to read widely and this platform will motivate some writing about what I have read. The emphasis will mostly be on the work, but as necessary I’ll do a bit of ‘splaining for folks who have different technical understanding of the issues.
